Munchin' In München

Now that we're nearing the last third of our trip, one month left to go, we sat down on sunday night to plan out roughly our remaining trip. This quickly led to the realisation that we have lots we want to see and not all that much time to do it in. With that in mind we had to sadly visit München (Munich) on a Monday when many of the museums were closed but that's just the way the mop flops.

Spoilt by Vienna's public transport system and afraid of Munich's clean air zone we opted to leave the bikes in Moira and head to the city on a tram day pass. This dropped us right in the heart of the old city market square surrounded by historic buildings. Pictured above is the new town hall and behind the double onioned Frauenkirche. These are both examples, along with the various city gates, of the city's expansion beyond the interior medieval wall. In a cute style of symbolism, behind us on this square was the older, smaller, town hall and the smaller St Peters Church.

To honour the title we found 2 vegan restaurants and had a 'lunch crawl'. Above showing a vegan duck vietnamese curry which was delicious, although Rob was unimpressed by the portion size: price ratio.

Tempted by the sight of Englisches Garten on the city map we headed over to see some of our native flora only to be met by a curious spectacle. On the entrance to the park the river went through a weir and made waves which were keenly taken advantage of by these surfers.

The 2nd food stop being a very exciting find, a vegan cat cafe. We treated ourselves to a vegan pulled pork tiger bowl and...

a whole host of fluffy friends

Reaching the closing time of many of the remaining shops in the city we headed out back to Moira and a 45 minute drive around the city ring road to a lovely park for the night outside Dachau.

For various reasons we were sadly unable to hit some of the key sites in Munich, so in lieu of that here's some Munich history that we sadly didn't explore:

1932: Hitler's first attempt to seize power started in a beer hall in the city. This abortive putsch, that found Hitler hiding in a wardrobe then arrested, took place in a beer hall that has since been demolished and is now part of an industrial estate.

1938: The Munich conference where Czechoslovakia was dismembered to appease Hitler's territorial gains was held in an impressive state building that was sadly closed and the road blocked with road works

1944-45: 90% of central Munich and 50% of Munich in general was demolished by allied air raids leading to much of the historical old town to no longer survive.
