Scottish Shenanigans

East Coast Road Trip

Our first leg of the NC500 takes us right to the northern most part of the UK and runs all along the Eastern coast of the North of Scotland.

At our lovely park up just above Cromarty we decided to spend our first full day of the NC500 there and explore a local coastal walk. This first took us to the Macfarquhar’s Bed cave. Whilst down there, and sheltering from the sudden rains, we shared our shelter with a lovely Danish lady and her dog who were travelling in their van too, as well as a local Scottish metal detectorist with his recent find.

Danni got friendly with the locals in Cromarty.

On the last leg of the route around Cromarty we came back to the two Sutors, or shoemakers. Legend has it that two giants used the cliffs as their worktables and threw their tools back and forth. Reality has it that giants aren't real but massive glaciers are.

Forever trying to skim stones.

Wednesday was the start of several days of little stops in the process of getting some of the miles of the NC500 under our belt. First stop was the Big Burns Waterfall seen above.

Straight after the waterfall we headed down to the coast for another coastal walk but this time the 6th castle of our trip so far.

Further up the A9, the very very long road from Stirling almost right up to John O' Groats, we stopped off at a very highly reviewed museum. This did contain a chunk of a 7th castle with some excellent advice of how to be wise: you need to do 6 things "Mind what you say, to whom, when you say it, how, where, and why". (Disclaimer I forgot the actual quote but be rest assured that its something close along those lines".

Danni in awe of either the big cliffs or the 309 steps required to get down to them.

After another super busy day we parked up just south of Wick at the site of the old castle.
